Furballs & Remembrance Stone Poppy

Finally I have this commemorating dishcloth done plenty of time ahead :)  Dissecting and recycling the theme from last year, this time the poppy comes with four (4) petals and a relief / 3D centre.

This dishcloth is done in bias knitting and with being more like a stockinette type of fabric, it remains in diamond shape.  The granite stitch in two (2) repeats makes up the border.  The most "designing" part is how to start the border at four (4) stitches and knit up in bias.  I am using a centre out approach, i.e., keeping the centre stitches the same and expands at the both left and right edges, the continuity of the border is tied up by the inside border of the edges.

Also with the border, we set up a set of short rows on both sides to ease out the rippling due to stitch height differences.  We took the easy approach with the short rows with the start and end in the stockinette rows of the granite stitch.  Short rows according to pattern is also possible and will be featured in another pattern, Furballs' Heart of Stone, to be published in early 2020.

And then we have the flower pattern lol  At first, I was trying out with garter stitch but it just did not show up nice.  So after a few frogging and drawing back on past experience, I decided to try out reverse stockinette stitches and these gave me the look I wanted.  The flower centre is an one take and done.  I really like the way the picot stitches arranged and its look on top of the fabric.  In the cotton sample, I used a different colour for the picot stitches and it did bring out more of the pattern.  One point to remember is that the stitch on the needle for the coloured picot is the main colour, meaning the last stitch in the picot stitch will switch to main yarn.  This actually helps with carrying the yarn along and also minimize bleeding (since the main yarn is no longer idle behind but "active" in the row).

Furballs say they can knit this dishcloth up with one eye opened.  Perhaps flapping the tail up and down a few times will help :D

I hope you will enjoy knitting up this pattern, and please do not forget to donate generously to your local veteran association when you use this pattern in whole or in part.  Furballs and I thanks you in advance :)

Next blog in November will be on increases and decreases in granite stitch to shape.  Happy knitting :)
