Furballs' Broken Stone Seed
For the month of February, we are making Furballs' Broken Stone Seed for the donation to registered charity organization(s) helping with the bushfire and the wildlife affected in Australia. Check out Red Cross or World Wild Life to see if they have special funding set up for the purpose. It is in response to the call from Operation Gondor in Ravelry's Budding designers' Forum
In this dishcloth, it has a mocked mitered look with the travelling cable crossing in the centre. The use of granite stitch and broken seed stitch is a nice combo but the stitch length difference is there and therefore it has this barrel shaped look fresh off the needle. I managed to do the "dry block", pull the piece in every direction possible and it is possible to get a straight edge rectangle look for a few second, so wet blocking to form a formal look is totally possible. Otherwise I do not see anything wrong with a barrel shaped dishcloth. It will not work less efficient than a rectangle one lol
For the travelling cable, I am using two (2) stitch cable which could be knitted like regular or doing the twisted stitch both should give the same result. Another option that is not included in the pattern is using the diagonal stitch. As for my preference, I like doing the regular cable with cable needle. It gives me a more consistent stitch size. Now I confess I do not own any cable needle at all, I use replacement on hand, maybe a yarn needle or perhaps a small size crochet hook, just whatever that can hold a few stitches temporary. I also like the diagonal stitch but since it has the k2otg or ssk involved, it is just making the travelling cable a tiny bit thicker and thus looks more sturdy in certain situation. As for the twisted stitch, I need a few practice every time to get the tension right and the stitch size even. If you look closely at the left twist (leaning to the left), it is not exactly the normal cable as the first stitch is knit through back loop, so the resulting stitch is twisted. The "correct" way is to knit through the front but it doubles the difficulty (and yes it is possible to do so - right needle in between the two (2) stitches from back to front, then reverse direction to go into the loop of the second stitch, now the needle is like in the right position in normal knitting, then knit the stitch; mother stitch still on left needle and daughter stitch back on right needle and back to left needle, continue using the right needle, knit into the first stitch).
This piece is easy scaled up and down to make into big drying towel to small coaster. The formula will be 2n + 6 where n is an odd whole number bigger than 1.
Furballs say difficulty for this piece is two paws up and both eyes opened.
For next month, we will have Furballs' Fossil Egg to get us ready for Spring and Easter. Happy knitting until then. MEOW
